At the Ultimate Wellness™ Conference 2025, Dr. Maya Georges Assi, Certified Biological Dentist at Alpha Dental Practice & Implant Center, presented a profound message: the mouth is not separate from the body.

It is an active biological system, deeply connected to our nervous, immune, and energetic networks—and oral procedures can influence systemic health in ways that traditional dentistry has long overlooked.

Biological dentistry is not simply a different technique; it is a different paradigm. Dr. Maya arrived at this perspective through personal experience, clinical observation, and rigorous study—beginning with a life-changing case that challenged everything she had been taught.

The Mouth–Body Connection:Biological Dentistry with Dr. Maya Georges Assi

A Case That Changed Everything

About ten years ago, a patient and lifelong friend called to share that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma. During his PET scan, one unexpected region “lit up”: a tooth with a previous root canal.

At the time, Dr. Maya dismissed the association. The literature, as she had learned it, did not support concern. She encouraged him to continue with medical treatment.

Months later, another patient—anxious but attuned to her body—presented with an undefined sensation beneath her nose. A trail of previous trauma, dead teeth, and root canal retreatments had failed to resolve the issue. Specialists insisted nothing was wrong. One told Dr. Maya to reassure the patient that “it was in her head.”

Instead, she listened.

An exploratory procedure revealed extensive nodular tissue extending toward the nasal cavity—“like papaya seeds.” A biopsy first appeared benign, but a second review confirmed B-cell lymphoma localized to the exact tooth in question. Astonishingly, it was the only site of disease.

When the University of Miami oncologist reviewed her findings, he wanted to know: How did she discover this?

Her answer was simple: Because she listened to the patient.

This experience lit a fire. She began re-studying scientific literature—this time through the lens of whole-body systems. She sought out biological dentistry associations and emerged transformed: practicing a philosophy focused on non-toxic materials, individualized care, and an understanding that oral health profoundly influences systemic terrain.

Dentistry as an Energetic and Neurological System

Dr. Maya emphasized that the head and jaw are home to extensive neural networks. The fifth cranial nerve alone occupies more than half of the cranial nerve space. Through axonal transport, substances can move backward from the teeth into neural pathways.

The mouth is also one of the most burdened areas for:

  • Heavy metals

  • Industrial materials

  • Chronic low-grade infections

Because these silent interferences affect the autonomic nervous system, patients may become stuck in sympathetic overdrive—unable to rest, repair, or regulate—despite excellent diet, sleep, or lifestyle practices.

Fluoride: A Developmental Neurotoxin

One of the most debated topics in dentistry is fluoride. Dr. Maya highlights that fluoride—derived from fluorine—is a halogen capable of displacing calcium, replacing iodine, and interfering with enzymatic pathways. Absorbed through oral mucosa, it can act as a developmental neurotoxin, particularly in children.

The difference in impact on a five-year-old versus an adult drinking the same glass of fluoridated water underscores the risks of involuntary exposure. Dr. Maya was part of the movement that successfully removed fluoride from public water in Florida.

Mercury Amalgams: A Constant Vapor Source

Traditional “silver fillings” are not silver—they are elemental mercury mixed with alloys. Mercury vaporizes at room temperature; brushing, grinding, and hot liquids increase exposure.

Even after decades, vapor continues to off-gas, as demonstrated in thermal video. The FDA acknowledges this but deems the levels acceptable.

Dr. Maya poses the question: If someone gave you a tiny dose of arsenic every day, would you agree to it—just because symptoms may not appear until years later?

She practices removal using the SMART protocol (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique), which minimizes vapor release and prevents ingestion or inhalation during procedures.

Metals, Corrosion, and Electric Current

Metal restorations can expose the body to heavy metals such as:

  • Nickel

  • Chromium

  • Cadmium

These can corrode in the presence of saliva, generating galvanic activity—small internal electrical currents. Some patients experience symptoms such as headaches or neurological disturbances that resolve once metals are removed.

Root Canals: Silent Interferences

Root canals remove the nerve but cannot fully sterilize the intricate micro-channels within the tooth. Residual tissue + bacteria = a chronic immune trigger.

Because immune cells cannot enter micro-tubules, infections can persist silently. Bacterial byproducts (thioethers, mercaptans, hydrogen sulfide) move systemically with chewing and circulation.

Not all root canals must be removed, she says—but they must be evaluated. Treatment should be individualized, not one-size-fits-all.

Jawbone Cavitations

Areas where teeth were previously extracted can form unhealed voids—fatty, necrotic spaces within the bone. They are often asymptomatic but may raise inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and RANTES/CCL5, drawing immune resources away from healing and longevity processes.

Wisdom tooth removal, she notes, is over-prescribed. If removal is necessary, surgical technique and regenerative support—PRF, ozone, structured recovery—are key to preventing cavitations.

Titanium vs. Ceramic Implants

Titanium, while widely used, can cause hypersensitivity in genetically predisposed individuals. Inflammatory reactions may mimic autoimmune illness, chronic fatigue, or persistent implant inflammation.

Dr. Maya advocates for ceramic (zirconia) implants:

  • Neutral in the body

  • Do not corrode

  • Do not conduct EMF or heat

  • Create tight epithelial seals, preventing “leaky gum”

  • Offer strong functional and aesthetic outcomes

She shared stories of patients whose systemic symptoms resolved after switching from titanium to ceramic.

Sleep, Airway, and Structural Health

Airway collapse, mouth-breathing, snoring, and sleep apnea restrict oxygenation—compromising recovery, nitric oxide production, cardiovascular health, and neurological function. Dentistry, Dr. Maya believes, should serve as the first line of defense, because oral structure determines airway capacity.

The Oral Microbiome

The mouth hosts its own microbiome, and its balance influences systemic inflammation. She recommends:

  • Coconut oil pulling

  • Copper or stainless-steel tongue scraping

  • Hydroxyapatite-based toothpaste

  • Natural floss (e.g., CocoFloss)

  • Oral probiotics

She strongly cautions against traditional antiseptic mouthwash, which disrupts the oral microbiome and eradicates nitrate-reducing bacteria essential for nitric oxide synthesis. This disruption is associated with elevated cardiovascular risk.

Tools of Biological Dentistry

Her practice routinely integrates:

  • Ozone

  • PRF (Platelet-rich fibrin)

  • Ceramic implants

  • Biomimetic restorations

  • 3D cone beam imaging

  • Photobiomodulation

  • Microbiome testing (e.g., Biomp Labs)

  • DNA testing of extracted teeth

Every step is designed to preserve biological integrity and avoid toxic burden.

A New Paradigm of Care

Dr. Maya credits her team for “unlearning traditional dentistry and relearning a new model.” Her approach is guided by a deep respect for the body:

  • Minimal toxicity

  • Individualized treatment

  • Support of the body’s energetic, immune, and structural systems

  • Continuous learning

Above all, she listens to her patients—because symptoms are signals, not inconveniences.

Closing Thoughts

Biological dentistry reminds us that oral health is whole-body health. The mouth is not a mechanical system. It is a living ecosystem, a neurological hub, and an energetic organ that influences—and is influenced by—our entire physiology.

When we acknowledge this connection, dentistry becomes not just about treating teeth, but about supporting the vitality of the entire human being.

Dr. Maya Georges Assi stands at the forefront of this shift—rooted in science, guided by clinical experience, and committed to empowering patients with knowledge, options, and care that honors the interconnected nature of life.
