Breathe Better, Sleep Better: The Airway Connection — Workshop with Dr. Jared Helfant
At the Ultimate Wellness™ Conference 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Jared Helfant, DDS, founder of Dr. Jared Dental Studio in Miami Shores, for his workshop, “Breathe Better, Sleep Better: The Airway Connection for Adults & Kids.”

Understanding the Connection Between Breathing and Sleep
Breathing and sleep play essential roles in our overall well-being, influencing everything from daily energy and focus to recovery and long-term health. Yet, the connection between airway health and restorative sleep is often overlooked.
During his workshop, Dr. Helfant shared insights from his work in functional and airway dentistry, exploring how nasal breathing, jaw development, tongue posture, and oral health can influence sleep quality in both children and adults.
He highlighted common signs of potential airway dysfunction, including snoring, waking with a dry mouth, sleeping with an open mouth, teeth grinding, and feeling tired despite getting enough hours of sleep. In children, disrupted sleep may also appear as restlessness, difficulty concentrating, or behavioral changes.
Looking Beyond Symptoms to Find the Root Cause

A central theme of Dr. Helfant’s presentation was the importance of looking beyond individual symptoms to understand the underlying factors that may affect breathing and sleep.
He discussed how nasal obstructions, jaw structure, tongue posture, and oral muscle function can contribute to airway challenges. He also explained why early attention to airway development in children may help identify concerns before they become more complex.
Dr. Helfant introduced approaches used in functional and airway dentistry, including airway assessments, myofunctional therapy, and individualized dental interventions. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among dental professionals and other healthcare specialists when addressing sleep and airway concerns.
Why Restorative Sleep Matters
Quality sleep is about more than feeling rested in the morning. It supports the body's natural recovery processes and plays an important role in cognitive function, emotional well-being, metabolism, and physical performance.
By helping attendees better understand the relationship between breathing, oral health, and sleep, Dr. Helfant encouraged a more comprehensive perspective on wellness—one that considers how different systems in the body work together.
Persistent snoring, mouth breathing, or unrefreshing sleep may warrant evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional. Recognizing potential warning signs is an important first step toward understanding individual needs and exploring appropriate care.
