At the Ultimate Wellness™ Conference 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming Compton Rom Bada, M.S. in Microbiology and founder of Ascended Health, as a keynote speaker.

His keynote, “The Inner Universe: Microbiome, Energy, and Human Potential,” explored the human body as an interconnected ecosystem, highlighting the role of the gut microbiome in metabolic balance, cognitive function, and healthy aging.

The Inner Universe: Exploring the Microbiome, Energy, and Human Potential with Compton Rom Bada

Beyond the Human Genome: The Inner Ecosystem

Compton’s presentation challenged the conventional view of the body as an isolated biological system. Instead, he introduced the idea that human health is closely connected to the diverse community of microorganisms living within us.

Drawing on his background in microbiology, functional foods, and Living Systems approaches, he explored how the gut microbiome influences the body's internal environment and how microbial diversity may contribute to overall well-being and longevity.

A central theme of his keynote was that health is not determined by genetics alone, but is also shaped by the ecosystem we cultivate. Food, lifestyle, and environmental factors all play a role in supporting the complex relationships between microorganisms and the human body.

The Microbiome, Postbiotics, and Metabolic Balance

Compton highlighted the importance of postbiotics — compounds produced by microorganisms — and their role in the relationship between the gut microbiome and the rest of the body.

He discussed how microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, participate in biological processes related to gut health, metabolism, and communication between the gut and brain.

The keynote also explored the concept of keystone microbes: microorganisms that can have a significant influence on the broader microbial community. Rather than focusing exclusively on the number of live bacteria in a probiotic supplement, Compton encouraged a more targeted perspective on microbial diversity, function, and the compounds these organisms produce.

Another important topic was the gut-brain connection. The microbiome's relationship with mood, cognition, and metabolic function offers an additional perspective on how interconnected systems contribute to human health.

Cultivating the Ecosystem Through Food

A significant part of the presentation focused on the relationship between nutrition and the microbiome. Compton discussed the importance of diverse plant fibers, fermented foods, and polyphenol-rich foods in supporting microbial communities.

He also introduced the concept of precision prebiotics — an approach that considers how different types of fibers and other dietary compounds may support particular microbial populations.

His broader message was that nutrition involves more than simply providing the body with fuel.

Food also interacts with the microorganisms within us, influencing the environment in which they live and function.

The keynote connected these ideas to research into longevity, including the microbiome of people who live to advanced ages. It invited attendees to look beyond individual nutrients or supplements and consider the wider ecosystem that supports long-term health.
