Exploring Mindful Breathing Through Real-Time Biofeedback Technology with RESPA

Breathing is one of the most fundamental functions of the human body, yet it is often overlooked in conversations about health and well-being. While many people pay attention to nutrition, exercise, and sleep, conscious breathing offers another important way to influence the body's response to stress and support nervous system balance.

At the Ultimate Wellness™ Conference 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming RESPA Sensor @respasensor, an innovative wearable breathing sensor that makes mindful breathing measurable through real-time biofeedback and guided breathing sessions.

As part of the conference, Baabi Das, Founder of RESPA, and Masaki Nakanishi, PhD, Chief Data Science Officer at Zansors, hosted an interactive workshop titled “Experience Your Breath: A Live Interactive Biofeedback Workshop by Respa®.”

Exploring Mindful Breathing Through Real-Time Biofeedback Technology with RESPA

Understanding the Connection Between Breathing and the Nervous System

During the workshop, Dr. Nakanishi explored how breathing patterns are connected to the body's physiological response to stress.

When the body experiences stress, heart rate may increase, heart rate variability (HRV) may decrease, and sympathetic nervous system activity may become more dominant. Slow, controlled breathing can help shift the body toward a more relaxed state, supporting parasympathetic nervous system activity and changes in heart rate and HRV.

Dr. Nakanishi introduced several guided breathing techniques, explaining how different breathing patterns can serve different purposes:

  • Box Breathing: Inhaling for four seconds, holding for four seconds, exhaling for four seconds, and holding again for four seconds. This technique is commonly used to support calm and focus during stressful or high-pressure situations.

  • Rhythmic Breathing: Following a steady pattern with five-second inhalations and exhalations and a brief pause. This approach can be incorporated into daily practice to support breathing consistency and long-term resilience.

  • 4-7-8 Breathing: Inhaling for four seconds, holding for seven seconds, and exhaling for eight seconds. This technique is often practiced for relaxation and as part of a bedtime routine.

An important question emerged: How do we know whether we are actually following the breathing pattern correctly?

Counting seconds internally can be challenging, and our perception of breathing duration does not always match what we are doing physically. This is where biofeedback technology can offer a new perspective.

How RESPA Makes Breathing Measurable

RESPA combines a wearable breathing sensor with a mobile application to provide guided sessions and real-time feedback.

The small wearable device measures chest movement during breathing. Using a three-axis accelerometer and machine-learning algorithms, the system processes movement data to identify different breathing phases: inhalation, holding, and exhalation.

Following each session, users receive feedback through several metrics:

  • Breath Match: Measures how closely the user's breathing follows the guided breathing pattern.

  • Smoothness: Provides feedback on movement stability during the session, including subtle body movements and muscle activity.

  • Stillness: Measures changes in posture throughout the breathing exercise.

These measurements offer a way to observe breathing patterns and movement rather than relying entirely on subjective perception.

The technology can also provide insights into body awareness and posture during practices such as yoga, where maintaining stability and control is an important part of the experience.

An Interactive Experience: Participants Try RESPA

The highlight of the workshop was the opportunity for attendees to experience the technology themselves.

Participants connected their RESPA sensors to the mobile application, selected guided breathing sessions, and practiced following the visual and audio instructions.

During a 30-second breathing exercise, attendees could observe how closely their breathing matched the intended pattern and review their results afterward.

The experience demonstrated how technology can make an otherwise largely unconscious process more tangible and observable.

Dr. Nakanishi also emphasized that achieving a perfect score is not the goal. Consistent practice and gradually developing better breathing habits matter more than reaching 100% in a single session.

Bringing Science, Technology, and Consciousness Together

Exploring Mindful Breathing Through Real-Time Biofeedback Technology with RESPA

The RESPA workshop offered a practical example of how modern technology can complement mindfulness practices.

Breathing is always with us, yet we rarely give it our full attention. By combining conscious breathing with real-time biofeedback, RESPA creates an opportunity to develop greater awareness of the relationship between breath, body, and movement.

This approach reflects the philosophy of Ultimate Wellness™: bringing together science, technology, consciousness, and ancient wisdom to support the whole human being.

We are grateful to Baabi Das and Masaki Nakanishi, PhD, for sharing their knowledge and giving our attendees the opportunity to experience this innovative approach to mindful breathing.

✨ Join us next September for the Ultimate Wellness™ Conference 2027!
