At the Ultimate Wellness™ Conference 2025, Dr. Amy B. Killen—co-founder and CMO of Human Health and founder of the Health Optimization Project—delivered a keynote, ‘Achieving SEXponential: Sexual Optimization,’ illuminating an often-overlooked aspect of wellness: sexual health as a cornerstone of longevity and holistic well-being.

Drawing on decades of medical experience, cutting-edge research, and regenerative medicine, Dr. Killen framed sexual health as both a biomarker and driver of overall health.

The Exponential Rise of Sexual Medicine

Dr. Killen introduced the concept of “exponential medicine,” highlighting the rapid advancements in medical science—AI, robotics, nanotechnology—and paralleling these breakthroughs in sexual medicine. She cited a large-scale U.S. study following 12,000 people over 11 years, which found that individuals who had sex at least once a week experienced a 50% lower all-cause mortality rate compared to less sexually active peers. Similar findings have been reported internationally, showing that men with higher libido and women who experience sexual satisfaction tend to live longer and healthier lives.

Dr. Killen emphasized that while these studies demonstrate correlation rather than causation, the benefits of a healthy sex life extend across emotional, cognitive, physical, and social domains. Sex positively influences mood, reduces depression and anxiety, improves memory, supports sleep, lowers blood pressure, enhances immune response, and even protects telomeres—the molecular markers of aging.

The Hormonal and Neurochemical Symphony

Sexual activity triggers a cascade of beneficial neurochemicals:

  • Dopamine – the “expectation” hormone, enhancing motivation and pleasure.

  • Endorphins – naturally reducing pain, akin to a runner’s high.

  • Serotonin – promoting contentment and emotional stability.

  • Oxytocin – the bonding hormone, lowering cortisol and shielding the brain from stress-induced damage.

Dr. Killen humorously noted that recreating this neurochemical cocktail outside of sex would require extreme measures—combining long runs, Prozac, and cocaine—which underscores the unique physiological benefits of sexual activity.

Sexual Health at the Center of Wellness

Dr. Killen positioned sexual health as central within the ecosystem of wellness, influencing mental, emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and environmental health. Issues in sexual health can both signal and exacerbate problems in these areas. Stress, busy lifestyles, and the fight-or-flight dominance in modern life often inhibit sexual function, particularly in women, who require activation of the parasympathetic nervous system—what Dr. Killen calls “rest and receive”—to fully experience pleasure.

Four Pillars of Sexual Longevity

Dr. Killen shared a practical, four-pronged approach to sustaining sexual health throughout life:

  1. Mind the Mind – Reducing stress and cultivating parasympathetic activation through meditation, breathwork, journaling, time in nature, and technology-assisted interventions such as photobiomodulation or vagal nerve stimulation.

  2. Boost Blood Flow – Cardiovascular health is directly linked to sexual function. Maintaining optimal blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipid profiles, along with nitric oxide production through exercise, diet, and selective therapies, supports genital perfusion and overall vitality.

  3. Optimize Hormones – Hormones like estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone are critical for sexual function. Men experience a gradual decline in testosterone, which can often be mitigated by lifestyle factors, while women face a dramatic estrogen drop at menopause. Preventive strategies include lifestyle optimization, reducing endocrine disruptors, and, when appropriate, medically guided hormone therapy.

  4. Support the Structures – The pelvic floor, genital tissues, and related muscular structures require maintenance for sexual function. Techniques include pelvic floor exercises, diaphragmatic breathing, and emerging therapies such as low-intensity shockwave therapy, intravaginal red light therapy, topical estradiol, and regenerative biologics like stem cell injections. These interventions improve blood flow, tissue health, and functional outcomes for both men and women.

The Power of Sexual Health

Concluding her keynote, Dr. Killen shared a personal reflection, recounting a moment when she realized her “superpower” was sex—an expression of human connection that fosters intimacy, emotional resilience, and longevity. She emphasized that this power is accessible to everyone, reinforcing the profound role sexual health plays in long-term well-being.

Dr. Amy B. Killen’s message is clear: sexual health is not a luxury; it is a fundamental pillar of wellness. Attention, action, and informed interventions in this area can profoundly influence physical, emotional, and cognitive longevity. In a world of ever-expanding medical possibilities, understanding and prioritizing sexual health is one of the most powerful tools we have to live longer, healthier, and more connected lives.
